The Misty River region itself corresponds to the present-day Mississippi River watershed, in the far, far future. Global climate change resulted in mass ecological collapse, mass sea level rise greatly altering coastlines around the world, but eventually to an ice age - from which we have only re-emerged in the past few thousand years.
