Riverfolk

To outsiders, nearly all humans of the realm of the Misty River are “Riverfolk” and to some degree this is true. Perhaps the Tanasi are not so different from the Carmi or the Herons. But strictly speaking, Riverfolks are those who inhabit the central valleys along the main Misty River itself.

These people have great affinity for the rivers, are well-known for their prowess as fishermen, and navigate the waterways with great ease. Riverfolk are greatly sought after as navigators.

The Riverfolk are lead by the River Controllers. This shadowy group exercises control over locks, gates, and dams along the Misty River and some of its central tributaries. Very little is known about the Controllers' inner workings, though, and the Captain's word is always considered final.

The core guiding principle of the River Controllers is that all trade must be funnelled into the markets of the Great Towers - they will go to great lengths to prevent shipping directly between any of their neighbouring valleys, to prevent overland trade, and to bring swift retribution to any in violation.
